The installation of Ebara Pumps are easy when used with QDC (Quick Discharge Coupler). Usually used for submersible pumps only. There may be some discharge during operation at the sides, which should not be of much concern. As long as the function of the pump is to just transfer water. Ebara Submersible Pump has good record for their quality and functionality.

A Grundfos Vertical Multistage Pump is rather well designed. The pump mid section is well protected with stainless steel cover, with future after sales service in mind.

There are chances of water leakage at the intersection of Motor shaft and pump shaft. This is due to wear and tear of the mechanical seal that has the function of isolating water from the motor shaft while rotating.

Grundfos designed mechanical seals are also called cartridge seals and it is very easy to replace not to mention very cost effective as well. This pump usually has a life cycle of 10 years and more, until it’s housing of rotary shaft and impellers are completely corroded, the pump continues to supply a steady stream of water with desired pressure.

During Fire Pump Servicing it is noticed that Fire pumps in Malaysia are mostly using gland packing to seal and isolate water from pump and electric motor. This is due to :

1. Reliability: Gland packing has been used for many years and is a reliable sealing method when installed and maintained correctly. It can withstand high temperatures and pressure, making it suitable for firefighting applications.
2. Cost-effective: Compared to some modern sealing technologies like mechanical seals, gland packing can be more cost-effective, which can be a consideration when choosing components for large-scale applications like fire pumps.
3. Easy to Maintain: Gland packing can be adjusted and repacked relatively easily, which simplifies maintenance procedures and reduces downtime for servicing.
4. Temperature Resistance: Fire pumps handle high-temperature fluids, and some types of gland packing materials can withstand these extreme temperatures without significant degradation.
5. Sealing Performance: When properly installed, gland packing can provide effective sealing even under challenging conditions, making it suitable for firefighting scenarios.

However, technologies have evolved over time, and fire pumps that uses gland packing can be modified to use mechanical seal instead.

Mechanical Seals are used to seal media from entering into unwanted spaces. It comes in different design and sizes. To ease the installation process, cartridge mechanical seals are designed specifically for this purpose.

ROTEN latest design of the cartridge seal TYPE 600SL, is a single cartridge balanced seal with flush. It’s a cartridge seal without sleeve that gives great flexibility to this seal. It’s very simple to install without the necessity to check the installation dimensions. The springs are out of the media and this ensures no – clogging troubles free operation. The conical form of the stationary seat increase the flush capabilities of the media. It has a good cost/performance ratio. All seal parts are out of stuffing box and this gives more fluid circulation on the seal area.

The above cross-section of ROTEN Cartridge Mechanical Seal Type 600SL clearly shows a cartridge seal without sleeve. This is truly a revolutionary design for pump’s sealing solution.

A great example for the use of this cartridge mechanical seal is paint. Such media hardens quick when not agitated constantly. With the use of ROTEN Type 600SL, clean water can be supplied into the mechanical seal flushing away clogging medias, keeping it internally clean for the next use. Even when pump is not running during down time, as long as flushing is done correctly, the cartridge mechanical seal can have a longer usage lifespan.  Thus giving it a good cost/performance ratio.

In this age of mass production having multiple variations of the same product is inevitable. However, there are a few tell-tale signs to determine if the product that you paid a premium for is of the highest quality, correct specification and from a genuine manufacturer.

How to determine Genuity of ROTEN mechanical seal?

1. The picture above shows the comparison of two mechanical seals. One is an imitation of the original ROTEN brand. If your guess is correct, the mechanical seal on the left is the imitation of ROTEN.  The stamp is probably laser marked onto and out of standard.
2. The surface roughness of the mechanical seal’s metal part is far from satisfactory compared to the degree of tolerance set by ROTEN, it is visible even to the naked eye. The original ROTEN has a smooth surface enabling it to reflect light, appearing shiny.

Getting the original ROTEN mechanical seal means you are guaranteed in the quality as specified. You save money by not getting a product that is prone to fail at most uncertain times.
